Sonia Gandhi underwent surgery in the US today

Congress president Sonia Gandhi underwent surgery in the US today, the details of which are still not available.
She is expected to be away for nearly three weeks.
Making an announcement, Congress General Secretary Janardhan Dwivedi told reporters the 64-year-old leader was recently diagnosed with a medical condition and has been advised surgery.
“On the advice of her doctors, she has travelled abroad and she is likely to be away for two to three weeks,” he said.
Replying to questions, he said, “We have just got information that the surgery is successful and her condition is satisfactory.”
But later he clarified the surgery has not yet been carried out and that it could take place in a day or two.
The doctors attending on her have to decide, he said.
While party insiders are tightlipped about the nature of the ailment, highly placed sources said, her absence from Delhi few months ago was related to the same medical problem. The earlier trip was also to the US for diagnosis while this one is for surgery and treatment.

It may be noted that after her previous visit, Sonia Gandhi resumed regular work and also formalised the Cabinet reshuffle with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Sources also pointed out that rumours about her being on vacation in Switzerland during the summer were baseless as she was undergoing medical investigations. The family at all points wanted to keep this a private affair.
Dwivedi announced that Gandhi has decided in her absence a group comprising Rahul Gandhi and senior leaders A K Antony, Ahmed Patel and Janardhan Dwivedi will look after party affairs
